MEXICO: At least ten migrants died and 25 were wounded early Sunday when a cargo truck clandestinely carrying them overturned on a highway in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas, local officials said.
The deadly accident took place near the border with Guatemala. It was the second fatal accident in less than a week involving migrants. The victims were apparently from Cuba and all were female, including one minor, AFP reported citing sources.
The crash occurred on a stretch of highway along the Pacific coast between the towns of Tonala and Pijijiapan, where migrants often travel as they attempt to reach the US.
The truck, whose body was partially built of wood, was destroyed, with the migrants’ bags, clothes, and backpacks strewn around it.
Two Migrants Die in Chiapas
On Thursday, 2 migrants died when a truck overturned in the municipality of Mezcalapa, also in Chiapas state.
Thousands of migrants from different nations have been traveling across Mexico in buses, freight trains, and trailers in an attempt to reach the United States.
