DUBAI: Chairman of a Dubai-based multinational company on Wednesday said that Taliban stopped around 100 women from travelling to the United Arab Emirates to pursue higher studies.
Khalaf Al Habtoor, founder and chairman Al Habtoor Group, had announced scholarships for Afghan students in December last year.
Al Habtoor in a statement said he was eagerly waiting for the arrival of Afghan students who secured scholarships from prominent universities in UAE.
Taliban Stopped 100 Female Students Heading to Dubai for Higher Studies
He expressed disappointment over the act of Taliban terming it as human tragedy. He went on to say such decision is against justice and violates the basic rights of Afghan citizens.
He requested the relevant authorities to intervene in the matter and help the Afghans students.
Al Habtoor added that basic facilities like accommodation, health insurance, transport for the Afghan female students in Dubai had already been arranged.
The female students were stopped at Kabul airport from boarding a plane heading to Dubai.

Afghan students were selected to study at the University of Dubai and Mohammed bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
He said the Taliban authorities had stopped the women from pursuing higher studies in UAE without any justification.
Earlier Taliban chief spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid had stated that ban on female education in Afghanistan will not be lifted.
The Taliban, after returning to power in 2021, had stopped girls from attending schools beyond sixth grade, a decision which was criticized globally. Currently Afghanistan is the only country in the world that bans female education.
