Doha: The Taliban during a meeting with senior US officials called for the lifting of sanctions from their leaders and the return of frozen assets of the country.

The Taliban delegation met with US Special Envoy Thomas West in Doha amidst continuing sanctions against the Taliban.

The Taliban regained power in Afghanistan two years ago, however, no country has recognized them so far.

Taliban’s foreign ministry spokesman Qahar Balkhi in a statement after the meeting said the blacklisting of Taliban leaders should come to an end and bank reserves be unfrozen to help the Afghan economy.

The US had frozen Afghanistan’s foreign reserves amounting $7 billion when the Taliban took over the country in 2021.

On the other hand, most of the leaders of the Taliban are on the UN’s blacklist and cannot travel freely.

It is pertinent to mention that the Purple Saturdays Movement, of women in some Afghan provinces urged the international community not to lift sanctions from the Taliban.
