DUSHANBE: The governments of Tajikistan and Iran have signed a memorandum to abolish visa requirements for their citizens, effective August 10, 2024, the Tajik Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

The new agreement will allow holders of ordinary foreign travel passports from both countries to visit each other’s territories without needing a visa for up to 90 days from the date of their first entry. However, the duration of each stay must not exceed 30 days.

Initially, this visa-free travel arrangement will only apply to air travel between the capitals of the two countries, Dushanbe and Tehran. This phased approach aims to facilitate easier and more efficient travel for citizens of both nations while ensuring a smooth transition to the new system.

The memorandum of understanding on repealing visa requirements was originally signed on November 8, 2023, following high-level negotiations between Tajik and Iranian officials. The agreement marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations and promoting increased people-to-people exchanges and tourism.

Officials from both countries have expressed optimism about the potential benefits of the visa-free travel arrangement. Travelers and business communities in both countries have welcomed the agreement. The agreement is expected to enhance tourism, with both nations offering rich cultural heritage and historical sites that attract visitors.
