ISLAMABAD/TAIWAN: Taiwan on Tuesday unveiled a plan to allow women for the first time to volunteer for reserve force training.

Training for female

The Taiwanese Defence Ministry said it would allow 220 discharged female soldiers to participate in the training starting in the current year’s second quarter. All-out Defence Mobilization Agency of the Defense Ministry’s representative Maj-Gen Yu Wen-cheng said the move would be on trial for this year.

Earlier, the Defense Ministry of Taiwan said it did not have enough capacity to accommodate both genders; therefore, it only trained male reservists. It is gender discrimination if women are excluded from reserve training amounts to gender discrimination, said lawmakers in Taiwan.

Taiwan said in December that it would increase the four-month military service requirement for all eligible men to a year beginning in 2024. This requirement will apply to men born after 2005.
