Miller, Brevis rescue Proteas
Opting to bat first, South Africa suffered early setbacks as India’s pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh ripped through the top order.
Captain Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton were all dismissed inside four overs with just 20 runs on the board.
David Miller then joined Dewald Brevis and the pair staged a remarkable recovery.
They added 97 runs for the fourth wicket off just 49 deliveries to shift the momentum.
Brevis struck 45 off 29 balls, hitting three fours and three sixes, before falling to Shivam Dube in the 13th over.
Miller continued the assault. He added 35 runs with Tristan Stubbs and top-scored with 63 off 35 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, before being dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy in the 16th over.
Stubbs remained unbeaten on 44 from 24 deliveries, striking three sixes and a four. His late flourish helped South Africa finish strongly at 187 for 7.
For India, Bumrah was the standout bowler with three wickets for 15 runs in four overs.
Arshdeep took two wickets, while Chakravarthy and Dube claimed one each.
India collapse in chase
Chasing a challenging 188, India never found momentum against a disciplined South African attack.
Shivam Dube fought a lone battle, top-scoring with 42, but lacked sustained support.
Hardik Pandya and captain Suryakumar Yadav made 18 each.
Abhishek Sharma scored 15 and Washington Sundar added 11. No other batter reached double figures.
Marco Jansen led the bowling charge with four wickets.
Spinner Keshav Maharaj turned the match decisively in the 15th over, claiming three wickets.
Corbin Bosch picked up two, while Markram chipped in with one.
India were bowled out for 111 in 18.5 overs.
Streaks snapped
The loss was India’s first in 18 matches across ICC tournaments.
Their previous defeat came in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 final against Australia, also at the same venue.
It also ended India’s unbeaten run in T20 World Cups since their 10-wicket semi-final defeat to England in 2022.
South Africa, runners-up in the 2024 edition, delivered a statement performance in the Super Eight phase with a balanced display of power hitting and disciplined bowling.
