MUNICH: German prosecutors on Friday announced the arrest of a 27-year-old Syrian national suspected of radical Islamist views in connection with a plot to attack German soldiers in the Bavarian town of Hof.

The suspect allegedly acquired two machetes, each approximately 40 cm (15.75 inches) long, with the intention of targeting Bundeswehr soldiers during their lunch break and causing as many casualties as possible.

The suspect’s goal was reportedly to draw attention and instill fear among the public. In response to recent violent incidents involving asylum seekers, including a deadly knife attack in Solingen claimed by Daesh in August, Germany is tightening its border controls.

The rise in immigration and security concerns is also influencing the upcoming elections in Brandenburg, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is gaining significant traction.
