ISLAMABAD/DAMASCUS: An Israeli airstrike early on Wednesday targeted the international airport of the Syrian city of Aleppo, causing material destruction in the second attack on the facility this month, state media report.

State news agency SANA, quoting the unnamed military official, didn’t mention whether the strike caused deaths and injuries. It said that warplanes fired the missiles toward Aleppo city and one commercial centre while flying over the Mediterranean.

According to Arab News, the airport has been one of the major channels for the flow of aid into the country after the February 6 earthquake hit Syria and Turkiye, killing over 50,000 people, also including more than 6,000 in Syria.

Israeli airstrikes put airport out of service

On 7 March, the Israeli airstrike put the airport out of service for many days, and flights were rerouted to two other airports in the war-torn country until the vandalization was fixed.

The Israeli forces have carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria in recent years, including attacks on the Aleppo airports and Damascus, but it rarely acknowledges and discusses the operations.

Israel has acknowledged that it hits bases of Iran-allied militant groups, such as Hezbollah, which has sent thousands of fighters to support President of Syria Bashar Assad’s forces.

Israel has hit airports and seaports in the government-held parts of Syria in an apparent attempt to prevent arms shipments from Iran to militant groups backed by Tehran, including Lebanon’s Hezbollah.
