AMMAN: Syrian army air defences on Sunday intercepted an Israeli missile attack on the outskirts of Damascus, according to the official media.
Syrian state media, citing a military source, said that missile attacks from the direction of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights had attacked several unnamed facilities.
The Syrian military source said that their air defences engaged the missiles fired by the aggressor and downed several of them with relatively minimal damage. Reuters added that it could not immediately ascertain the Syrian claim.
Since starting to back President Bashar al-Assad in a civil war that broke out in 2011, Israel has been conducting assaults on what it has referred to as Iranian-linked sites in Syria, where Tehran’s influence has expanded.
According to Israeli military analysts, the attacks are part of an escalation of what has been a low-intensity battle with the aim of stopping Iran’s expanding encroachment in Syria.
Hezbollah and other Iran-allied fighters are currently in control of large portions of eastern, southern, and northwest Syria, as well as a number of the capital’s suburbs.
