STOCKHOLM: Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on Thursday voiced deep concern over the potential consequences of further demonstrations during which copies of the Holy Quran may be desecrated.

In a statement to Swedish news agency TT, Kristersson expressed his worries about the situation and the risk of serious incidents occurring if the requests for permission to desecrate the Holy Quran are granted. “I am extremely worried about what it could lead to,” he stated.

Meanwhile, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom clarified that the Swedish state does not approve or endorse such actions, but they are permitted under the country’s freedom of speech laws. He emphasized that the acts of desecration are carried out by individuals within the legal framework of freedom of speech.

Outrage Among Swedish Muslims

The issue of desecrating the Holy Quran has caused outrage among Muslims in Sweden, leading to several protests in recent weeks. Copies of the sacred text have been desecrated, sparking concerns and tensions within the country.

To address the situation, Billstrom revealed that he has been in communication with foreign ministers from countries including Iran, Iraq, Algeria, Lebanon, and the United Nations Secretary-General. He also plans to discuss the matter with the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Countries.

Regarding recent accusations, Sweden has accused Russia and other state-sponsored actors of spreading disinformation to harm the country’s reputation and thwart its bid to join NATO. Billstrom emphasized the importance of addressing these issues in a long-term manner, as there are no quick fixes to the challenges at hand.
