Suspect Arrested After Uranium Found at Heathrow Airport

LONDON: The UK Metropolitan Police said on Sunday that a man in his 60s was arrested in connection with a probe linked to the finding of traces of uranium found in a cargo bundle at Heathrow Airport in London.

Police said that the man was captured on doubt of a terror crime on Saturday and was released on bail as part of the probe. REUTERS reported that a very small quantity of uranium was found in a package on Dec. 29 at Heathrow Airport.

Richard Smith, chief of London police’s Counter Terrorism department said that, despite the detention, the incident does not seem to be connected to any direct threat to the people.

The suspect was taken to a police station in the northwest part of England and was released on bail on Sunday.

Uranium can be used for scientific purposes, and civilian power generation and is a main ingredient in nuclear arms.
