ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Wednesday issued a show-cause notice to Justice Mazahar Naqvi in response to the complaint alleging him of financial misconduct. The council, through a 4-1 majority vote, requested Justice Naqvi to submit his reply within 14 days.
On November 20, Justice Mazahar Ali Naqvi had challenged the SJC inquiry initiated against him over alleged misconduct and possessing assets beyond his means. In the Supreme Court, he challenged the inquiry, stating that the campaign against him is an attack on the judiciary.
Justice Mazahar Naqvi pointed out that the SJC sent a notice of further proceedings without addressing the objections, and he characterized the SJC’s October 27 press release as a “violation” of fundamental rights. He appealed to the apex court to issue an order against the SJC inquiry launched against him.
It is noteworthy that a complaint was filed against Supreme Court Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi in the Supreme Judicial Council by Mian Dawood Advocate. The complaint included charges of misconduct, illegal assets, and accumulating money through frontmen. The complainant has urged the judicial council to remove Justice Mazahir Ali Akbar Naqvi from the esteemed office of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
In April, Justice Isa and Justice Masood wrote a judicial letter to Justice Bandial, then the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), requesting the convening of an SJC meeting to review these allegations. In May, Justice Bandial referred the matter to Justice Tariq Masood for a legal opinion.
