ISLAMABAD: A citizen of Pakistan, Chaudhry Muhammad Imtiaz, has filed a plea with the Supreme Court seeking the disqualification of President Arif Alvi. The petitioner alleges that the president is violating his oath of office by working on the directions of a single political party. Imtiaz has urged the court to remove Alvi from the top office with immediate effect.

This is not the first time that a disqualification plea has been filed against President Alvi. Back in March of this year, a similar petition was filed under Article 62 1(F) of the Constitution, but it was turned down by the Supreme Court.

Petitioner raises objections to President Arif Alvi’s candidature

The petitioner in that case, Zahoor Mehndi, had raised six objections to Alvi’s candidature. One of the objections was that at the time of the presidential election, Alvi was an under-trial accused and thus not eligible for the presidency.

Mehdi himself had also submitted nomination papers to contest the election but was rejected for lack of a proposer and seconder.

Mehdi had argued that the appointment of an unqualified person as president was contributing to the crisis in the country, with political parties at odds with each other. However, the Supreme Court dismissed his petition.

It remains to be seen how the court will respond to Imtiaz’s plea for the disqualification of President Alvi. If the plea is accepted, it could have significant political implications for Pakistan.
