Supreme Court Dismisses Petition Against Constitutional Amendment Bill

ISLAMABAD:  The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed a petition challenging the 26th Constitutional Amendment following the petitioners opted to withdraw their plea, local media reported.

The decision was made during a hearing led by a three-member bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa. Advocate Hamid Khan has represented the petitioners in the court and informed the SC of their desire to withdraw the appeal.

With the withdrawal request granted, the Supreme Court of Pakistan formally dismissed the case against the Constitutional Amendment.

Earlier, local media reported that a consensus has been made between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) regarding judicial reforms as the top leadership of the political parties met in Lahore.

According to local media reports, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, President Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and other senior members of the three political parties attended the meeting.  Local media reported that a consensus was reached on the reforms.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s President Asif Ali Zardari has summoned separate sessions of the National Assembly and Senate on Thursday.  The Senate will meet at 03:00 pm and the National Assembly at 04:00 pm.
