ISLAMABAD: Excessive consumption of sugary drinks may not only contribute to weight gain and heart diseases but also increase the risk of hair loss, according to new research published in the journal Nutrition and Health.

The study, published in the journal ‘Nutrition and Health’, analyzed findings from 17 studies, involving over 61,000 participants, to explore the link between diet and hair health.

Findings revealed that individuals who consumed more than 3,500 ml of sugary drinks per week were more likely to experience hair loss, with the effect especially noticeable among men.

Experts explained that the high sugar content in these drinks can cause spikes in blood glucose levels, which may gradually weaken hair follicles. Over time, this weakening can impair the scalp’s ability to support healthy hair growth.

Doctors recommend limiting the intake of sugary drinks and focusing on a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients such as vitamin D, iron and protein.

Additionally, green leafy vegetables and soy-based foods are known to support strong, healthy hair. Researchers emphasise that daily dietary choices have a significant impact on hair health.

Limiting sugary drink intake and adopting a nutrient-rich diet can greatly lower the risk of early hair loss.

Evolutionary biologists recognise hair as more than a simple biological characteristic that is closely linked to a person’s identity, self-esteem, and psychological well-being.

Alopecia, or hair loss, is a widespread and distressing condition that impacts millions worldwide, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, or gender.
