PORT SUDAN: The commander of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), at war with the country’s army for over a year, agreed late Tuesday to truce talks next month. In a post on social media, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo stated he “welcomed” US’s invitation to talks. He wrote, “I declare our participation in the upcoming truce talks in Switzerland,”.

Earlier, the US has extended an invitation to the Sudanese military and the RSF for US-mediated truce talks starting on Aug. 14 in Switzerland. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement that the talks will include the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, the African Union, as well as the United Nations as observers.

The war in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has forced about ten million people from their houses, sparked warnings of hunger and waves of ethnically-driven violence blamed mostly on RSF. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said that the aim of the truce talks is to build on work from last session and make an attempt to move the talks to the next level.
