KHARTOUM: The chief of Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) demanded Friday that his rivals in the country’s army general staff step down to end fighting in the country.

According to AFP, in a video believed to be his first since the war erupted on April 15, RSF chief General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo told Sudan’s regular army forces that peace could be restored “within 72 hours” if they handed over their chief General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his aides.

In the video message, General Daglo claimed that he wanted a return to peace in the country. However, witnesses said explosions occurred in the Yarmouk weapons manufacturing and arms depot complex.

Earlier, the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, was hit by rockets on Thursday, while paramilitaries launched an attack on a crucial air force base north of the city, claiming to have inflicted casualties on government soldiers.

Witnesses reported “heavy artillery shelling” in the northwest of Khartoum, while drones belonging to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) targeted the air base, as reported by AFP.

The RSF stated that it had “destroyed three fighter jets, as well as stores of weapons, military equipment, and supplies,” asserting that its forces had “killed or wounded dozens” of soldiers.

More than 3,900 people have been killed, and over 3.5 million become homeless due to fighting in the country.
