PORT SUDAN: President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan has expressed his willingness to work with US President Donald Trump to resolve the conflict in the African nation, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
The ministry issued the statement following Abdel Fattah’s visit to Riyadh at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who recently presented a proposed Sudan peace plan to US President Donald Trump during a visit to Washington.
According to the Sudanese statement, Burhan praised Trump’s “determination to engage in efforts to achieve peace and bring an end to the war in the country”, noting that these efforts involve the participation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
“He affirmed Sudan’s keenness to work with President Trump, his secretary of state, and his envoy for peace in Sudan to achieve this unquestionably noble goal,” it said, referring to Marco Rubio and US envoy Massad Boulos.
It may be recalled that a drone attack on a United Nations peacekeeping base in Sudan killed six peacekeepers. The attack, which took place on Saturday, targeted the peacekeeping logistics base in Kadugli, located in Sudan’s Kordofan region.
The peacekeepers, all Bangladeshi nationals serving with the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), were part of a joint mission tasked with protecting civilians in the conflict-ridden region.
Since breaking out in April 2023, Sudan’s civil war has killed tens of thousands and displaced nearly 12 million, creating what the UN describes as the world’s largest displacement and hunger crisis.
Saudi Arabia has also been actively involved in Sudan through diplomatic efforts, facilitating talks, and providing humanitarian aid, as it seeks to end the conflict and restore stability.
