NEW YORK: Sudan’s chief of army staff General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan warned Thursday at the United Nations that war could spill over in the region as he asked the world to press his rival the paramilitary forces (RSF).
Sudan: Military Chief Warns UN that War Could Spill Over in Region
He said, “The risk of this war is now a danger to regional and world peace as those rebels have sought the help of terrorist outfits and criminals,”. He added that this is like the stimulus of war, a conflict that will spill over to other nations in the region. He said that the war in Sudan will have a direct effect on regional and global peace and security.
He asked the world powers to designate the RSF, as a terrorist outfit as the group has carried out all sorts of crimes that provide grounds for such a designation. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan added, “Those who have supported burning, forced displacement, killing, raping, stealing, looting, trafficking of drugs, and arms all such crimes demand punishment and accountability,”.
War broke out on April 15 following the collapse of a roadmap to integrate Sudan’s regular army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), led by General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
The war in Sudan has killed as many as 7,500 people, and displaced about five million people, dealing a fresh, shocking blow to efforts to bring democracy to the African country.
General Burhan has increasingly been traveling worldwide in what is seen as an attempt to burnish his legitimacy.
Washington earlier imposed sanctions on RSF leaders including Abdelrahim Hamdan Daglo, the brother of the group’s leader, over alleged abuses including the assassination of the governor of West Darfur.
The country’s military chief said that they were still committed to their pledges to transfer authority to the people of Sudan with great national consensus.
