ISLAMABAD: Internet service in parts of Pakistan has been disrupted due to a fault in the global submarine cable SMW4 on Tuesday, according to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
The SMW4 (SEA-ME-WE 4) cable, one of seven key submarine cables that connect Pakistan to the global internet infrastructure, experienced a malfunction affecting internet speeds, particularly during peak usage hours.
In a statement, the PTA acknowledged the issue and assured users that teams are actively working to identify and rectify the fault as quickly as possible. “Users may experience slow internet service during peak hours due to the malfunction,” the PTA said.
Submarine cables are critical for international internet connectivity, carrying vast amounts of data across continents. Any disruption in these cables can significantly impact internet services, leading to slowdowns or outages.
The PTA has not specified the exact cause of the malfunction or provided a timeline for the restoration of full services. However, efforts are underway to address the issue and minimize the impact on users.
This disruption highlights the vulnerability of internet infrastructure to technical faults and the importance of maintaining and monitoring these vital connections to ensure reliable service.
