Strong Earthquake Rattles Turkish Coast, Greek island

ATHENS: The Athens Geodynamic Institute said that a strong tremor with a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 hit Wednesday off the southeastern Greek island of Rhodes. Reports say that there were no immediate reports of injuries and damage.

Greek and Turkish Coast

The earthquake rattled the nearby Turkish provinces of Izmir, Mugla, and Antalya, and was also felt in Cairo, Egypt. Turkiye’s Emergency Agency said it had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4, and it is common for several seismological institutes to record variations in magnitude in the initial hours following an earthquake.

HaberTurk television reported that there were no reports of damage and injuries in Cario and in Turkey.

Athens Geodynamic Institute said that the quake hit at 2:37 p.m. Greek time and had an epicenter nearly 400 kilometers southeast of Athens. Turkiye and Greece lie in a highly seismically active region.
