JAKARTA: A 5.7-magnitude strong earthquake jolted Java Island and other parts of Indonesia on Saturday, the United States (US) Geological Survey said. This was another earthquake in less than two weeks in the same province that killed over 330 people.
According to USGS, the land at a depth of 112.5 kilometers (70 miles), and the earthquake’s epicenter was located 18 kilometers southeast of the Java city of Banjar.
Immediately, there were no reports of human casualties or major damage to buildings and other installations.
Indonesia’s meteorological agency gave a magnitude of 6.4 for the earthquake, which also jolted buildings in Jakarta, the country’s capital city, AFP news agency reported.
No Tsunami Threat in Indonesia After Earthquake java
However, the agency said there was no tsunami threat in the country.
Last month a moderate 5.6-magnitude earthquake hit Cianjur town in West Java. At least 331 people were killed, thousands were injured, and tens of thousands were made homeless after the collapsed buildings in the affected parts and triggered landslides in mountainous areas.
Several people were found buried under the debris in the days following. Only several people were successfully rescued, including an operation to rescue a minor boy, which the emergency workers described as a “miracle.” – APP/AFP
