GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Israel has carried out overnight air strikes against Hamas, the Islamist movement, in the Gaza Strip following a rocket allegedly fired from the Palestinian enclave toward Israeli territory.
According to the Israeli army, on Saturday evening, Israel received a rocket from the Gaza Strip, in the first such incident in a month. The attack followed a threat of retaliation by Islamic Jihad, one of Gaza’s larger armed factions, after two of Islamic Jihad’s leaders were killed by Israeli troops in the West Bank town of Jenin days earlier.
The Israeli army in a statement said that a weapons manufacturing site belonging to Hamas was targeted by IDF fighter jets overnight (Sunday), in response to the rocket fired on Israeli territory. It said the site where the majority of the organization’s rockets in the Gaza Strip are manufactured was the target. The Israel Defense Forces also hit “a Hamas tunnel in the Southern Gaza Strip”, according to the military. It further said a few hours later, it targeted a Hamas post in response to the alleged fire from the Gaza Strip against Israeli warplanes.

Hamas used anti-aircraft missiles during the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip. The Gaza security sources have recorded two strikes in the south of the enclave which caused no injuries.
Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem said that the Zionist enemy is extending its aggression against the people by brutally bombarding the Gaza Strip. An increase in bloodshed in the occupied West Bank has invited international criticism of the Israeli army for its use of brutal force against Palestinian civilians.
According to the reports, at least 145 Palestinians have been killed in violence-related incidents in the West Bank in 2022, the heaviest toll since 2015. In the month of August this year, as many as 49 Palestinians were killed in three days of fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian people in Gaza.
