Street Crime in Karachi Claimed 130 Lives This Year

KARACHI: As 2023 nears its end, street crime in Karachi remained high with 130 people in the port city losing their lives to snatching incidents, according to media reports.

The crime rate in the outgoing year recorded an increase as compared to 2022 when the daily rate of street crime was 240. In 2023, it soared to 247 with robbers claiming 130 lives and injuring more than 600, in contrast to the government’s claims that efforts to curb street crime were yielding results.

According to the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), over 82,632 street crime incidents were recorded in 2023 so far. There has been no control over crime in the city, rather an increase was observed in the cases of murder and robbery.

In Karachi, a total of 619 people were reported murdered in the outgoing year so far, according to police reports. In 2023, dacoits ‘snatched’ the lives of 130 persons while over 600 people were injured resisting robberies, as per the reports.

The month of August proved to be the worst with 8,207 reported incidents in a single month as the incidents included mobile phone snatching, car theft, motorcycle theft, and other crimes.

In January 2023, a total of 7,249 street crime incidents were reported, with the victims being deprived of 2,379 mobile phones, 4,643 motorbikes and 227 cars.

In February, 6,798 such incidents were reported in which 2,255 mobile phones, 4,380 motorbikes and 163 cars were snatched.

In March, victims were deprived of 2,577 mobile phones, 5,057 motorbikes and 188 cars, taking the total number of reported incidents to 7,822.

In April, 7,287 such incidents were reported, with the victims being deprived of 2,253 mobile phones, 4,873 motorbikes and 161 cars.

In May, 7,845 incidents of crime were reported, with the victims being deprived of 2,472 mobile phones, 5,208 motorbikes and 165 cars.

In June, 7,141 incidents were reported, with the victims being deprived of 2,200 mobile phones, 4,748 motorbikes and 193 cars.

In the month of July, 7,162 incidents were reported, with the victims deprived of 2,092 mobile phones, 4,912 motorbikes and 158 cars.

In August, 8,207 incidents were reported, with victims deprived of 2,582 mobile phones, 5,394 motorbikes and 231 cars.

In September, 8,070 crime incidents were reported, with victims being deprived of 2464 mobile phones, 5399 motorbikes and 207 cars.

In October, 7,866 incidents were reported, with victims being deprived of 2446 mobile phones, 5213 motorcycles and 207 cars.

In November 7,185 incidents were reported, with victims deprived of 2272 mobile phones, 4724 motorcycles and 189 cars.
