MILAN: Automaker Stellantis has announced to develop electric vehicle (EV) batteries, much lighter in weight to enhance sustainability and performance of cars, Western media reported on Friday.
Electric vehicle (EV) batteries too heavy
Its chief Ned Curic said current electric vehicle (EV) batteries were too heavy and affect running of the vehicle.
Curic while inaugurating the group’s Battery Technology Center in Turin, Italy said his team would introduce EV batteries with at least 50% lighter in weight by 2030.
He stressed the need for significant reduction in the weight of the battery to improve sustainability of EVs.
Stellantis, the world’s third-largest carmaker, has invested 40 million euros ($43 million) in its Battery Technology Center in Turin. This center will mainly focus on in-house testing and development of EV battery for Stellantis vehicles.
Curic also stated that his company will launch a very affordable electric vehicle by the end of this year. He highlighted the significance of making electric vehicles accessible to all consumers.
Stellantis, which owns famous auto brands such as Fiat, Peugeot, and Jeep, is committed to enhance sustainability in the auto industry.
