LONDON: Britain must remain calm and measured in its response to escalating tensions in the Middle East, Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said, stressing the need to address growing public concerns about regional instability.

Speaking to reporters, Starmer underscored the importance of diplomacy, restraint, and close coordination with international allies to prevent further escalation of the conflict.

He noted that while the security situation remains complex, the UK’s priority is to safeguard national interests, protect British citizens, and contribute to de-escalation efforts.

“I know the whole country is worried about the potential for escalation,” Starmer told parliament.

“We need to act, therefore, with clarity, with purpose and with a cool head.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks came after US President Donald Trump renewed criticism of Britain’s limited support for recent US strikes on Iran.

Trump questioned the UK’s stance, urging stronger alignment with Washington’s approach to the crisis.

In response, Starmer defended Britain’s position, stating that any decision involving military action must be guided by international law, strategic judgment, and long-term regional stability.

He emphasised that the UK remains committed to working with partners to reduce tensions and avoid actions that could widen the conflict.

Government officials indicated that diplomatic channels remain active, with Britain engaging regional stakeholders to support ceasefire efforts and prevent further deterioration of the security environment.

Starmer reiterated that maintaining stability in the Middle East is not only vital for the region but also for global energy markets and international security.
