COLOMBO, Sri Lanka: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena resigned on Monday, a day after Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a Marxist-leaning candidate, won the country’s presidential election.
Gunawardena, who became prime minister in July 2022 following the resignation of former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid economic turmoil, announced his resignation via X (formerly Twitter), expressing gratitude to outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe for his support.
Wickremesinghe, appointed by parliament after Rajapaksa fled, was defeated in Sunday’s election. Gunawardena has formally sent his resignation to President-elect Dissanayake, marking a significant political shift in the debt-stricken nation.
