DUBAI, UAE: The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) warned on Wednesday of a severe hunger crisis in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile state.
The rebel group reported that 20% of families are experiencing extreme food shortages, and 30% of children suffer from malnutrition, amounting to what they described as a famine. The crisis has been exacerbated by the ongoing civil war between Sudan’s army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as well as a poor harvest.
The SPLM-N accused both the army and the RSF of blocking aid deliveries and destroying the infrastructure necessary for food production.
They claimed the government in Port Sudan is selling aid intended for the region, while the RSF is closing markets and targeting civilian areas, displacing residents and burning crops. The conflict has plunged half of Sudan’s population into food insecurity, with 756,000 people facing catastrophic hunger.
The army and RSF have not yet responded to these accusations.
