The United Nations (UN) convened a high-level conference of the heads of counter-terrorism agencies in the member states on June 19 of 2023 with the theme, “Addressing Terrorism through Reinvigorated Multilateralism and Institutional Cooperation.” The opening session was addressed by H. E. Ambassador Youssef Al-Dobeay, the Assistant Secretary-General of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC).
Ambassador Al-Dobeay, speaking at a high level session attended by many ministers and dignitaries including H.E. Mr. António Guterres, United Nations Secretary-General and H.E. Mr. Csaba Krösi, President of the 77th Session of the United Nations, expressed OIC’s dedication and commitment to addressing the challenges in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. The OIC also stated its willingness to support international efforts to prevent terrorism and other issues, including those of relevant UN organisations.
The two-day conference will continue discussing the growing and emerging threats of terrorism in its upcoming thematic high-level miniterial sessions, as well as ways to overcome these threats and challenges, such as by increasing regional and international cooperation, exchanging information and best practises, raising awareness, and building capacity among UN member states.
The United Nations and its member nations and international organisations will be holding additional events and activities throughout the present counter-terrorism week. Among these is the anticipated passage of a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly to review global counter-terrorism efforts.
In addition, a side event will be held on the topic of terrorism and cooperation across regional organisations, hosted by the United Nations Office of the Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and co-hosted by the Permanent Observer Mission of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the Permanent Observer Mission of the African Union in New York.
