BARCELONA: The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has accused Women’s World Cup player Jenni Hermoso of spreading “lies” about a kiss shared between her and federation president Luis Rubiales. The RFEF has warned of potential legal action as both sides vehemently contest the nature of the incident.
In the wake of Spain’s victory against England in the World Cup, Hermoso and Rubiales have provided conflicting accounts of the kiss, prompting a fierce exchange of statements. The RFEF, alongside Rubiales, asserted their intention to unveil the “lies” and defend the federation president’s honor through legal means if necessary.
“We will not hesitate to take legal actions to protect the integrity of the RFEF President,” the statement declared.
Hermoso had previously refuted Rubiales’ claims, insisting that she did not consent to the kiss on the lips that followed Spain’s triumph. Rubiales had contended that the kiss was “mutual, euphoric and consensual,” maintaining that Hermoso had given her approval.
Spanish Football Federation Chief Refuses to Resign
Rubiales, who has faced widespread criticism, expressed his determination not to resign despite the controversy, attributing the situation to a campaign aimed at his removal. In a passionate address, he recounted the events of the kiss, emphasizing that Hermoso had not only consented but also initiated physical contact by lifting him in her arms.
However, Hermoso strongly rebuffed these assertions, revealing that she felt “vulnerable and the victim of an assault.” In a statement released through her Futpro union, she clarified her stance: “I want to clarify that at no time did I consent to the kiss that he gave me and in no case did I seek to lift up the president.”
Hermoso’s participation in a strike of women players against Rubiales’ behavior underscores the depth of discontent within the women’s football community. The dispute over the alleged incident has underscored broader issues related to gender dynamics and respect within the sport.
