MADRID: Just over three weeks after inconclusive snap polls in Spain, the country’s parliament will open again on Thursday under a cloud of political uncertainty that could end in a fresh election later this year.
The 350 legislators elected on 23 July will gather in the capital city Madrid for a new parliamentary session to elect a new speaker, although the man who would be kingmaker will be in Brussels, where he has been living in exile since the failed Catalan independence bid of 2017, according to AFP.
Key Figure Wanted by Spanish Judicial Authorities
In an astonishing twist of events, it is Catalan separatist leader Carles Puigdemont, who is wanted by the Spanish authorities over his role in the 2017 crisis, who now holds the keys to the fate of the next government of Spain.
On Thursday, legislators will renew the leadership of the Congress of Deputies (parliament), choosing a new speaker along with 4 deputies and 4 secretaries.
It has created keen interest as it is widely seen as a prelude to the all-important investiture election for a new prime minister, which should take place next month.
