ISLAMABAD: Spain’s ministry of interior Wednesday said that police arrested a man believed to be behind a recent series of letter bombing campaigns that targeted the country’s prime minister and the Ukrainian embassy.
The 74-year-old Spanish man was arrested in Miranda de Ebro in the country’s northern part and the ministry said police were undertaking of his home.
The bombs were sent to a number of locations across Spain in late November and early December. A Ukrainian embassy employee sustained light injuries while handling a package.
Sites that were targeted included Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez’s official residence, Spain’s defence ministry, and an air base near the country’s capital Madrid from where weapons donated by Spain are delivered to Ukraine.
Following the embassy incident, Kyiv increased security at its embassies around the world.
Report on Russia planning the bombing campaign in Spain
Prior to the arrest, the New York Times had reported on Sunday that Russia’s military intel officers had directed associates of a Russian-based white supremacist militant group to carry out the bombing campaign in Spain.
According to the report, American officials informed the newspaper that the Russian officers wanted to keep European governments off guard and could be testing proxy groups in the scenario Moscow decides to escalate a conflict.
