South Korea, US, Japan Raise Concerns About North Korea-Russia Defence Cooperation

SEOUL:  The United States, Japan, and South Korea expressed concern on the talks of defence cooperation between North Korea and Russia, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday.

In a statement, the South Korean Ministry said that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, South Korea’s Foreign Minister Park Jin, and Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa agreed to respond resolutely to any actions that threaten regional security in violation of UNSC resolution in a brief meeting.

Recently North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un visited Russia and reportedly discussed defence cooperation with Russian President Putin.

Washington and Seoul have expressed concern that the meeting was aimed at allowing Moscow to acquire ammunition from North Korea to supplement its declining stocks for its war in Ukraine.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol stated that if Moscow supported North Korea enhance its arms programs in return for help for its war in Ukraine, it would be “a direct provocation” and South Korea and its partners would not stand futilely by.
