ISLAMABAD/SEOUL: South Korean authorities have said they tried to track down the Chinese citizen who tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival but went missing while waiting at the quarantine facility.

South Korea Health official stance on covid-19

Health officials said on Wednesday that a person tested covid-19 positive after arriving at Incheon International Airport near Seoul late on Tuesday and was transferred to the nearby hotel to await admission to quarantine, but then went missing.

He said that the individual, who was not identified, has been placed on the wanted list, the official, Kim Joo-young, said. A person could be subject to up to one year in prison, and 10 million won in fines if convicted of violating the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act. Kim said that a person could be deported and banned from entering the country for certain period of time.

South Korea announced mandatory covid tests on Chinese arrivals, joining the growing list of states imposing restrictions amid concerns over the wave of infections following Beijing’s decision to lift stringent zero-covid-19 policies.

South Korea has required travellers from China to undergo a covid-19 test upon arrival. From January 5, arrivals can submit the negative result from a covid test taken no more than 48 hours before departure, and the negative rapid antigen test no more than 24 hours before the departure. A total of 2,189 people have arrived from China in the country since January 2.
