SEOUL: A cold wave alert has been issued across South Korea as temperatures plunged below zero nationwide, the Yonhap news agency reported on Friday, citing the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

Friday morning experienced a substantial temperature drop of seven to 15 degrees Celsius compared to the previous day, with readings dipping below zero throughout the country.

The KMA issued a cold wave advisory for Seoul on Thursday night, anticipating the morning lows to persist below minus 12 degrees for at least two consecutive days or to drop by more than 10 degrees, reaching below minus 3 degrees the following day.

This advisory extends to areas in the Gyeonggi province surrounding Seoul and regions in the eastern Gangwon province and southeastern areas, including the port city of Busan.

The cold spell is predicted to persist through the weekend, prompting the interior ministry to elevate its cold wave warning level from “attention” to “caution.” —Xinhua/APP
