KEY POINTS
- Brevis dazzled with a 41-ball century against Australia, scoring 125 runs
- His innings set multiple records, including the fastest T20I century by a South African
ISLAMABAD: Dewald Brevis achieved a remarkable milestone, becoming South Africa’s youngest player to score a century in T20 international cricket, breaking multiple national records in the process.
The young star, affectionately known as ‘Baby AB’ for his playing style reminiscent of the legendary AB de Villiers, dazzled fans with an incredible 41-ball century against Australia in Darwin on August 12.
South Africa started their innings with a shaky 44 runs for 2 wickets in just under five overs when Brevis took to the crease, batting at number four.
At first, he played carefully, scoring 14 runs from his first 11 balls. However, he soon found his rhythm and quickly accelerated his scoring.
Within just 25 balls, he reached his first T20I fifty, and then in a spectacular show of talent and power, he hammered out the remaining runs to complete his century in just 41 balls.
Brevis finished his innings with a staggering 125 runs, which included 12 boundaries and 8 sixes, boasting a remarkable strike rate of 223.21.
Throughout his innings, Brevis not only impressed with his skill but also broke several records. He became the second-fastest South African to score a century in T20Is, just behind David Miller, who achieved the feat in 35 balls back in 2017.
Brevis’s score also overtook the previous highest individual score for South Africa in T20 cricket, previously held by Faf du Plessis with 119 runs in 2015.
Moreover, he set a new record for the highest score by a South African against Australia in T20Is, surpassing Ruturaj Gaikwad’s score of 123 runs earlier this year.
At just 22 years and 105 days old, Brevis is now among the youngest T20I centurions from Full Member countries and stands sixth overall across all players.
The youngest ever to reach a century in T20Is remains Afghanistan’s Hazratullah Zazai, who scored 162 runs against Ireland in 2019 at the age of 20 years and 337 days.
