LAHORE: South African batter Matthew Breetzke made a sensational One Day International (ODI) debut, breaking a 47-year-old record by scoring an astounding 150 runs against New Zealand in the tri-nation series at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Monday.
The 26-year-old opener’s remarkable innings spanned 148 balls and featured 11 boundaries and five sixes, propelling him to the top of the all-time list for the highest debut score in ODI history.
The previous record was held by West Indies legend Desmond Haynes, who tallied 148 runs back in 1978.

Breetzke also became the fourth South African to achieve a century on debut, joining the ranks of Colin Ingram, Temba Bavuma, Rassie van der Dussen, and Reeza Hendricks. His stellar performance was instrumental in South Africa posting a formidable total of 304-6 in their 50 overs.
Breetzke formed a pivotal 131-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Wiaan Mulder, who contributed a solid 64 runs from 60 deliveries, striking five fours and a six. The debutant’s innings came to a close as he departed after an unforgettable 150, leaving a lasting mark on the game.

In the bowling department, New Zealand’s Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke each claimed two wickets, while Michael Bracewell added one to his tally. South Africa’s squad featured four debutants as key players were engaged in a T20 league back home, while New Zealand made a strategic change by replacing Rachin Ravindra with opener Devon Conway after an injury sustained during the series opener against Pakistan.
