DUBAI: South Africa delivered a sensational performance in Dubai, defeating defending champions Australia to secure their place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 final.
A brilliant batting display, led by Anneke Bosch’s unbeaten 74, propelled the Proteas to a memorable victory, knocking out the tournament favorites and advancing to Sunday’s final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
After winning the toss and opting to bowl, South Africa made early inroads into Australia’s batting lineup. The Proteas restricted Australia to 134/5, with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding.
Ayabonga Khaka was the standout with figures of 2/24, while Marizanne Kapp also impressed, taking 1/24 and producing a crucial run-out to dismiss Beth Mooney (39).
Australia’s top order struggled, losing early wickets and finding themselves at 18/2. Mooney, along with captain Tahlia McGrath (27), helped stabilize the innings.
Late cameos from Ellyse Perry (31 off 23) and Phoebe Litchfield (16* off 9) lifted Australia to a competitive total, but it was not enough to faze the determined South African side.
Chasing 135 under the lights, South Africa’s openers started strongly. Skipper Laura Wolvaardt anchored the innings with 42 from 37 balls, supported by Tazmin Brits, who contributed 15.
However, it was Bosch who stole the show, scoring a rapid 74* off just 48 balls, guiding her team past the finish line with ease.
Bosch’s aggressive yet composed innings meant South Africa remained well ahead of the required rate. Even after Wolvaardt’s departure, the Proteas remained in control with just 15 runs needed for victory.
Fittingly, Bosch hit the winning runs, sparking celebrations among the South African team and fans in Dubai.
