ISLAMABAD: South African wicketkeeper-batter Heinrich Klaasen has announced his retirement from international cricket after a seven-year career.

In a statement shared on social media, the 32-year-old said the decision was difficult but made with clarity and peace of mind, citing personal and family priorities.

“It is a sad day for me… but one that I have absolute peace with,” Klaasen wrote, revealing that stepping away was a tough yet essential move for his family and personal future.

Klaasen, who burst onto the international scene in 2018, leaves behind a legacy of grit, flair, and consistency.

Over 122 appearances for the Proteas, he carved a niche with his fearless stroke play and steady hands behind the stumps.

In ODIs, he racked up an impressive 2,141 runs at an average nearing 44, including a blistering top score of 174.

His T20I numbers were equally compelling—1,000 runs at a fiery strike rate of 141.84, with a highest of 81.

Klaasen had earlier stepped away from Test cricket in January 2024 after a brief four-match stint.

He was a cornerstone of South Africa’s campaigns in recent ICC events, including the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy, adding steel to the middle order and energy behind the stumps.

As he announced his international gloves, Klaasen expressed heartfelt thanks to his coaches, teammates, and supporters who stood by him throughout his journey.

With his departure, South Africa says goodbye to not just a player, but a fighter—one who gave everything in green and gold.

His absence will be felt, but his legacy will continue to inspire a new generation of Proteas.
