ISLAMABAD: South Africa bowled out Pakistan for 167 in 46.1 overs in their second innings on the third day of the opening Test at Gaddafi Stadium on Tuesday, setting a victory target of 277 runs for the hosts.

Spinners Simon Harmer and Senuran Muthusamy delivered exceptional performances, dismantling Pakistan’s middle order and putting South Africa firmly in control of the two-match series opener.

Pakistan’s chase began poorly with Imam-ul-Haq dismissed for a duck, stumped by Kyle Verreynne off Harmer in the second over, leaving Pakistan at 2-1. Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood built a 31-run partnership before Harmer struck again, dismissing Shan for seven, leaving Pakistan at 36-2 by lunch.

After the break, Abdullah and Babar Azam added 31 runs before Muthusamy removed Abdullah for 41, leaving Pakistan at 64-3. Babar, supported by Saud Shakeel, took the score past 200 before Rabada dismissed Babar for 42, leaving Pakistan at 119-4. Shakeel was dismissed for 38 off 53 balls by Muthusamy, and at tea, Pakistan were 150-5.

Removing Shaheen Afridi

The final session saw Harmer dismiss Rizwan for 14, and Muthusamy claimed two quick wickets, removing Shaheen Afridi for a duck and then Salman Ali Agha and Noman Ali in the same over. Harmer wrapped up the innings by removing Sajid Khan for one. Muthusamy finished with 5/57, Harmer took 4/46, and Rabada claimed 1/23.

Earlier, South Africa were bowled out for 269, with Noman Ali taking 6/112 and Sajid Khan claiming 3/79. Tony de Zorzi starred with 104, and Ryan Rickelton added 71. Pakistan posted 378 in their first innings, with Imam-ul-Haq and Salman Ali Agha scoring 93, Shan Masood making 76, and Mohammad Rizwan contributing 75.
