BAGHDAD: Iraq said Thursday it had apprehended several attackers who fired rockets at the US embassy last week amid high tensions over the Israel-Hamas war and found some had links to security services.
A salvo of rockets was launched early Friday at the US embassy in the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad, the latest in a flurry of such attacks amid the war in Gaza.
The attack caused no reported damage or casualties, and there was no immediate claim of responsibility, but a US spokesperson said indications are the attacks were launched by Iran-aligned militias.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani’s office Thursday reported several arrests over the attack and said that unfortunately, preliminary information shows that some of them have links with certain security services.
The search is underway for all those involved in this attack, said Sudan’s office in a statement, promising that they would be brought to justice.
The statement said that such attacks cannot be tolerated or condoned due to the serious threat they pose to the nation’s security and stability. They cause damage to Iraq’s dignity and reputation.
The statement, issued by Special Forces Major General Yehia Rasool, did not name the accused or what security services they were connected with.
But a security official in Baghdad, said that thirteen people had been arrested, including members of the security forces.
US presence in Iraq
The US leads an international coalition battling militants in Iraq and neighboring Syria. Its troops have come under repeated attack in recent weeks and have launched several attacks against Iran-linked fighters.
