BOGOTA: A small plane crashed into a residential area in Medellin, the second largest city of Colombia, on Monday.
City mayor Daniel Quintero announced the incident on Twitter, without elaborating if there had been any deaths or injuries. He said that a small plane has crashed in the Belen Rosales area. The rescue officials have reached there to assist the victims.
He also posted a video of the incident, showing thick black smoke rising above houses, with the emergency vehicles and ambulances rushing the scene. Sirens’s wailing sounds of the vehicles could be heard in the video.
Plane Signaled Engine Failure on Takeoff
According to the mayor, the unfortunate plane was a double-engine Piper flying to Medellin from Pizarro. It signaled engine failure on takeoff and could not return to the Olaya Herrera airport in Medellin.
The scenic city lies in a narrow valley surrounded by the beautiful Andes mountains.
