ISLAMABAD/VIRGINIA: A six-year-old student, who shot and seriously injured his teacher in a school in the US state of Virginia on Friday, has been taken into custody, police said.

Newport News police Chief Steve Drew said the teacher – a woman in her 30s – was transported to a local hospital after she was shot inside a classroom at Richneck Elementary School in Newport, adding that the shooting was “not accidental.”

No other students were injured in incident: police

The police chief further said that there was an argument between the teacher and the student, who possessed the firearm, and that a single round was fired. He said no other students were injured in the incident.

“We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best provide services to this young man,” he added.

The police said Friday evening that the teacher’s injuries were considered life-threatening but that there was “some improvement in the last update that we got.”

The police said that no other students were involved in the incident and that a probe was underway.
