JOHANNESBURG: Six soldiers were killed as a fire broke out at an army training center in the northeast of South Africa, the military confirmed on Saturday. The South African Army disclosed that the fire engulfed one of its training bases on Friday afternoon, with the blaze believed to have originated from a nearby mine and subsequently spreading to the camp area.
In a statement, the army expressed profound sadness, confirming the tragic loss of six soldiers during the incident. Additionally, three other military personnel sustained injuries with second-degree burns and were promptly transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.
The soldiers present at the camp were preparing for an annual army exercise when the fire erupted. Firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the blaze, which not only claimed precious lives but also led to the destruction of military equipment and vehicles stationed at the training camp.
