The state of Jalisco has been shaken by extreme violence linked to the Jalisco New Generation cartel, one of the key criminal outfits in the country.  Earlier, two police officials were killed in another shooting in Teocaltiche.

Since the government of Mexico in late 2006 started a military-backed anti-drug operation, over 340,000 killings and about 100,000 disappearances have been reported, most of them linked to criminal groups in the region.
