PHNOM PENH: Tragedy struck Cambodia’s capital on Saturday as a nightclub fire claimed the lives of at least six people, according to police. The inferno, which erupted in the early evening, resulted in the deaths of four men and two women, as confirmed by Phnom Penh Municipal Police spokesman San Sok Seiha.
Firefighters battled the flames for several hours before successfully extinguishing them. Authorities are now launching an investigation to determine the cause of the devastating blaze. The extent of the damage caused by the fire is still being assessed, and authorities are unable to confirm if there are additional victims until they can enter the burnt-out nightclub.
Fire Incidents in Cambodia
This incident follows a similar tragedy in December of last year when a fire engulfed a casino on the Thai-Cambodian border, resulting in the loss of 26 lives. During that incident, patrons were forced to leap from ledges and windows to escape the rapidly spreading flames. Authorities attributed the fire at the Grand Diamond City hotel-casino in Poipet town to an electrical fault.
The nightclub fire in Phnom Penh serves as a somber reminder of the importance of fire safety measures and the need for thorough investigations to prevent such tragedies in the future. As authorities continue their inquiries, the community mourns the loss of lives and awaits further information regarding the cause of the fire.
