ISLAMABAD/DHAKA: As many as six people were killed on Tuesday when an ambulance crashed into a CNG truck in the Shariatpur district of Bangladesh, around a hundred kilometers south of the capital Dhaka.

All onboard people, including the driver, lost their lives in the deadly collision. Rescuers said they had to work for hours to remove the bodies from the wrecked ambulance.

Ambulance hit the truck amid thick fog

According to the deputy director of the district’s Fire Service and Civil Defense, Md Selim Miah, the accident took place at about 4:20 am local time due to poor visibility caused by heavy fog.

He said the patient, ambulance driver, and a helper were among the deceased, adding that their bodies could not be recognized immediately. The ambulance was carrying the patient to Dhaka hospital and crashed into the truck coming from the opposite direction.

Bangladesh has the highest fatality rate of road accidents worldwide due to poorly maintained vehicles, damaged highways, lack of monitoring by the traffic department, and violation of traffic rules.

According to a report by Passengers’ Welfare Association Bangladesh, a local organization, 10,858 people lost their lives, and 12,875 others were injured in 7,617 railway, waterway, and road accidents in 2022 nationwide
