LAHORE, Pakistan: Pakistan’s veteran all-rounder Shoaib Malik has defended his decision to continue playing for Quetta Gladiators in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) season 10, despite also serving as a mentor for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
The 43-year-old has come under heavy scrutiny, with many fans and critics questioning whether he should be prioritising the development of younger players rather than featuring in the Gladiators’ playing XI.
Speaking to the media in Lahore, Malik addressed the growing criticism and outlined his vision for a more player-centric and forward-thinking PSL.
He began by clarifying the division of responsibilities within the team setup: “It’s the think tank’s job to devise strategies. As players, our duty is to deliver on the field when given the opportunity.”
Learning from past errors
“We’re working hard to learn from past errors and to improve our performances moving forward,” he added.
Malik, one of the most seasoned players in the competition, reiterated his commitment to his mentoring duties, saying, “I always try to fulfil my role as a mentor when required.”
He also emphasised that his contract permits him to play in the tournament. “My contract clearly states I’m eligible to play, and that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
“Many cricketers have shown me immense respect and support over the years, and I’ve always tried to reciprocate that.”
He went on to question the double standards of the criticism: “People are quick to ask why I’m still playing, but no one questions those who aren’t part of the PSL at all.”
Dismissing concerns about age, form
Malik also dismissed concerns about his age and form, insisting that he remains fit and capable of making a valuable contribution: “I’m still in good physical condition and confident I can deliver on the pitch.”
Looking to the future, Malik expressed optimism about both the PSL and his team, Quetta Gladiators.
He suggested that the completion of the league’s first decade marks an ideal moment for reform and progress.
“Now that PSL has completed ten successful seasons, I genuinely believe it’s time for the chairman and all stakeholders to come together and discuss how to elevate the league further,” Malik stated.
“This is a milestone moment. With proper planning, the PSL can become more competitive and beneficial for players and fans alike.”
He also voiced belief in Quetta Gladiators’ ability to recover from a tough start to the season: “We’ve had a few setbacks, but I believe we have the talent and spirit to bounce back.
