Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman said on Monday that health crises in flood-hit areas are getting worse with children falling victim to dengue, malaria and other water-borne diseases.
In a tweet, the climate change minister said that the World Bank has estimated around $40 billion worth of loss to Pakistan’s economy due to the recent floods but “we have conveyed and appealed to the world that the loss is much more on ground”.
She said that the World Bank has feared 9 million more people will go under poverty line in Pakistan as a result of the havoc caused by floods.
Sherry Rehamn said that since the last 18 weeks, “we are trying to save a maximum number of lives but the health crises in these areas are getting worse. Dengue, Malaria and other diseases are spreading immensely especially among the children”.
She further said that the “damage caused to houses, infrastructure, livestock and crops is much more than the estimated cost. We still have to do the rehabilitation work and for the 7.9 homeless people, we need resources.”
She also appealed to the world to come forward and help Pakistan in its rehabilitation work.
