BELGOROD:  Two persons were killed on Friday in a bombing on Russia’s Belgorod region in the bordering areas with Ukraine, while Russian troops attacked Kyiv for the sixth day in a row.

During the last few days, hundreds of locals have fled areas near Russia’s border with Ukraine as shelling intensified in the Belgorod region.

AFP reported that locals from Shebekino have been pouring into the main city, Belgorod, where the situation was comparatively calm on Friday. Belgorod’s sports centre looked packed but clean, locals said. As per local media reports, volunteers issued white bracelets permitting people to get free foods and organizing their transfer to smaller halls.

The governor of Belgorod Vyacheslav Gladkov told the media that over 2,500 people were being accommodated in shelters, including the sports arena.

Earlier, the regional governor said that two women were killed by bombing.  He added that two people were also wounded by the shelling that hit a village in the Shebekino region. A local official Vladimir Zhdanov said they were trying to evacuate people but faced very difficult conditions.

Earlier, Russia’s defence ministry said troops had used artillery and jets to prevent a Ukrainian attempt to “attack” the region of Belgorod. The army said, “The assault “involved up to 70 militants, 5 tanks, 4 armoured vehicles, and 7 pickup trucks,”.

Meanwhile, the US has said it does not support attacks inside Russia as it announced a fresh arms package for Ukraine.
